After a 17-year hiatus since Shrek Forever After (2010), the beloved ogre is finally back. DreamWorks Animation has released the first teaser trailer for ‘Shrek 5’, reuniting audiences with Shrek (Mike Myers), Fiona (Cameron Diaz), and the fast-talking Donkey (Eddie Murphy) for a brand-new adventure in the magical land of Far, Far Away.
The Teaser Trailer Breakdown
The teaser trailer, released by Universal Pictures on Tuesday, opens with a nostalgic storybook recap of the original 2001 film. However, the nostalgia is short-lived, as Donkey immediately interrupts the narration, declaring it’s time for a “makeover” and ushering viewers into a fresh, updated animation style.
The footage follows the gang as they travel across Far, Far Away, encountering classic fairy-tale chaos. A standout moment features the return of Gingy the Gingerbread Man, who proudly shows off a new “caked up” look, declaring he’s “caked up like a friggin’ bakery”. The trailer also hints at a new antagonist—a creepy, snowman-like character parodying Frozen’s Olaf—who approaches the group in a dark alley with the line, “You wanna date a snowman?”.
The teaser culminates with Shrek, Fiona, their children, and Donkey trapped inside a jail cell. As Shrek grows increasingly irritated by their situation, Donkey breaks into renditions of “Baby Come Back” and “Roxanne,” adding classic franchise humor to the closing moments.
The Cast Returns… with a New Generation
Returning to voice their iconic characters are Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Fiona).
Joining the ensemble is Zendaya, who voices Felicia, the teenage daughter of Shrek and Fiona. Marcello Hernandez (Saturday Night Live) and Skyler Gisondo (Superman) also join the cast as Felicia’s brothers, Fergus and Farkle, completing the ogre family.
Behind the Scenes
The film is directed by Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, both long-time franchise contributors, with Brad Ableson serving as co-director. Vernon previously directed Shrek 2 and voices Gingy, while Dohrn directed the Trolls sequels and voiced Rumpelstiltskin. The film is produced by returning producer Gina Shay and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri.
