The Grammy Awards are set for a major transformation. The Recording Academy has announced the addition of five new categories for the 2027 ceremony, a landmark shift designed to reflect the increasingly global nature of popular music .

This is one of the most significant structural updates in recent years, driven by a recognition that music boundaries are blurring and a diverse range of artists are commanding global fan bases .

The five new categories include:

  1. Best Asian Pop Music Performance
  2. Best Latin Song
  3. Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance
  4. Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance
  5. Best Traditional Folk Album

The decision was spurred by the success of K-pop and the achievements of Puerto Rican artists like Bad Bunny, whose 100% Spanish album won Album of the Year at the 2026 Grammys .

The Importance of Best Asian Pop

The new Best Asian Pop category is particularly significant for Indian music, which has become a global cultural export with artists like Diljit Dosanjh, Karan Aujla and AP Dhillon .

The category will honour “artistic excellence in Asian pop music performances originating from or widely recognised within Asian markets,” including K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop . It will require “meaningful use” of one or more Asian languages .

Grammys CEO Harvey Mason Jr. stated the Academy felt it was the right moment to “create a Category that more accurately reflects the genre’s scale, artistry and global impact” .

Spanish-Language Songs Get Formal Recognition

The new Best Latin Song category will be restricted to tracks predominantly in Spanish, formalising the language-based identity of the award . This follows Bad Bunny’s historic win and the broader rise of Latin music .

Rule Changes for Best New Artist

In addition to the new categories, the Recording Academy has revised eligibility rules for Best New Artist, allowing artists to be submitted up to four times instead of three .

A Push for Inclusivity

The inclusion of more Korean and Latin voting members in the Academy has also contributed to the shift, ensuring that the highest honours in music can better mirror the diversity of voices shaping the industry .

As the Academy noted, the changes are intended to better represent all music creators and reflect the reality of global listening trends .
