Hollywood’s Walk of Fame welcomed a new star on Friday as soccer legend David Beckham was honored with the 2,849th star. The ceremony, attended by his wife Victoria and close friend Tom Cruise, celebrated not just a sporting career, but a journey that Cruise described as a true “Hollywood story.”
The event took place on the same day Los Angeles hosted the U.S. portion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making the occasion a symbolic blend of sport and showbiz .
Tom Cruise’s tribute
Cruise, a longtime friend and fellow Walk of Famer, delivered a heartfelt speech praising Beckham’s journey from a working-class boy in East London to a global icon .
“His is a Hollywood story. A boy who believed in something bigger than himself, had to work for every opportunity he received, went on to influence his sport, shaped culture around the world and created opportunities for generations who followed,” Cruise said .
The actor emphasized that while Beckham’s career is defined by trophies and records, what stands out most is his character. “For all the records, achievements and recognition, the thing that has impressed me most is that success never changed who he is. The same core values that got him here, are the ones he lives by today,” Cruise added .
Cruise also praised Beckham’s family life, noting Victoria’s integral role in his journey and describing their bond as “a life that is every bit as meaningful as the career we are celebrating today” .
A friendship spanning decades
The appearance of Cruise at the ceremony underscored a friendship that has endured despite years of distance and speculation . The two first became close in the mid-2000s, with Cruise famously helping the Beckham family settle into life in Los Angeles after his move to LA Galaxy in 2007 .
Despite rumours of a rift that persisted for years, the two have maintained a strong friendship. Beckham, now co-owner of Inter Miami, remarked that Cruise’s presence at the ceremony marked a “full circle moment” as his first movie date with Victoria was to see Cruise’s 1996 film Jerry Maguire .
‘A boy who dreamed big’
In his own speech, Beckham reflected on his journey, calling the honour “surreal.” He told the crowd that as a boy growing up in the East End of London, he could never have imagined such recognition in Hollywood . He added: “I was obsessed with action heroes, so to stand here in front of my friend Tom Cruise – the greatest movie star of our time – is quite frankly mind-blowing” .
