A sequel to Warner Bros. and Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie has gotten a new title: A Minecraft Movie Squared.
In a joint Instagram post Saturday with the studios and Minecraft, the new official title was revealed. “Ready for another adventure? The world of #Minecraft is expanding once again with A Minecraft Movie Squared!” the post reads in part.
Returning cast and crew
Jared Hess, who directed last year’s film, is set to return to direct the video game adaptation and is penning the script with Chris Galletta, one of the original writers.
Producers will include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson and Jason Momoa.
Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Jennifer Coolidge starred in the original movie. Kirsten Dunst has joined the cast for the sequel.
Box office phenomenon
A Minecraft Movie was a huge box office success, grossing $957.8 million globally and becoming the second highest-grossing movie of 2025. The film came within striking distance of the billion-dollar mark – an impressive feat for a video game adaptation, a genre that has historically struggled at the box office.
The success continued a hot streak for video game movies, following the achievements of Sonic the Hedgehog, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Mixed reviews from critics
However, the film’s reviews were mixed. The Hollywood Reporter’s review noted: “The most disappointing aspect of A Minecraft Movie isn’t that it’s born out of an existing IP. What makes it so dispiriting is how it fails to spark the imagination, betraying a core tenet of the game on which it’s based.”
The review added that for Minecraft novices, the film “succeeds when showing off the game’s potential and championing the value of maintaining a childlike wonder in a bleak world.”
Audience scores were notably higher than critic reviews, with many fans praising the film’s visual effects and the chemistry between Jack Black and Jason Momoa.
What the title means
The new title – A Minecraft Movie Squared – plays on both mathematical notation and the idea of expanding the franchise’s universe. It suggests a sequel that is bigger, bolder, and perhaps more complex than the original.
Fans on social media have responded with enthusiasm, with many noting that the title is “exactly the kind of nerdy joke Minecraft fans would appreciate.”
Release date
A Minecraft Movie Squared is slated to release in theaters on July 23, 2027.
With the original film nearly crossing $1 billion, Warner Bros. will be hoping the sequel can finally push the franchise past that milestone. With Kirsten Dunst joining the cast and Jared Hess returning to direct, the studio is betting that the blocky world of Minecraft has plenty more box office gold to mine.
