Mumbai, India – The much-anticipated Mirzapur: The Movie is set to release in theatres on September 4, taking audiences back to the “unexplored” narrative set in 2018, the year the first season of the cult series premiered. The film is a prequel, positioned right in the middle of episode 6 and episode 7 of Season 1, meaning viewers will see characters who were later killed in the show, including Munna Tripathi (Divyenndu) and Golu Gupta (Shweta Tripathi), reprising their roles. The only casting change is Vikrant Massey’s Bablu Pandit being replaced by Jitendra Kumar.
The prequel will explore an untold, standalone chapter within the 2018 timeline, diving deeper into the explosive, violent, and grim relationship between fathers and sons in Purvanchal. The plot centers around a power struggle to gain control of Mirzapur. Pankaj Tripathi, who leads the series as Kaleen Bhaiya, revealed that audiences don’t need to have watched the series to enjoy the film. “You don’t need to be familiar with Mirzapur at all to enjoy the film. We have shot it from the point of view of community viewing,” he said. Ali Fazal, who returns as Guddu Pandit, reiterated that the film is a different story in itself, exploring the world within Purvanchal rather than being a direct continuation of the series.
Directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, the film reunites the regular cast, including Tripathi, Divyenndu, Fazal, and Rasika Dugal, alongside new entrants Jitendra Kumar, Ravi Kishan, and Abhishek Banerjee. A new location, Rajasthan, will play a crucial role in the film while expanding its visual flavour. Episode 6, titled ‘Barfi,’ marked a notable shift in the brothers’ journeys and introduced SSP Ram Sharan Maurya (Amit Sial), a police officer committed to confronting crime. Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment, Mirzapur: The Movie promises to be a gripping addition to the franchise.
