As the Oscar-nominated classic Lagaan completes 25 glorious years since its release, Aamir Khan is all set to bring the entire team back together for a grand celebration.
The milestone will be marked with a theatrical re-release of the film followed by a star-studded reunion party in Mumbai, where the actor-producer will host the cast and crew, including the film’s unsung technical staff.
Silver Jubilee Re-release in Theatres
Before the reunion, fans will get a chance to relive the magic on the big screen. Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India will re-release in theatres for a limited three-day run from June 12 to June 14.
The official announcement was made by Aamir Khan Productions on social media, accompanied by a nostalgic trailer that has already gone viral. The post read: “A timeless epic that touched every heart. On the 25th Anniversary of LAGAAN, the epic saga returns to the big screen. Relive the magic in theatres on 12th, 13th and 14th June.”
The Grand Reunion: Date, Venue, and Guest List
According to reports, the celebrations will culminate in a grand reunion party on Saturday, June 13, at a five-star hotel in Mumbai. While most Bollywood anniversaries focus on lead actors, Aamir Khan has ensured this event is different.
A source close to the development told Bollywood Hungama: *“The party will be held on Saturday, June 13, at a five-star hotel in Mumbai. The entire team of Lagaan has been invited for the bash. This doesn’t just include the principal and supporting cast, but every unit member and others who had contributed to the film.”*
The source added that the evening is expected to be an emotional trip down memory lane: “It’ll be a huge reunion for the whole team and they’ll go down memory lane and share their special memories associated with Lagaan.”
Aamir Khan ‘Excited’ to Reconnect
The actor, who recently returned from a holiday in Los Angeles, is reportedly “quite excited” about the gathering. Given that Lagaan remains one of the most defining projects of his career, he is looking forward to reconnecting with the people who made it possible.
Speaking about the bond the team shared, Aamir had earlier revealed a unique ritual from the sets. At a screening event earlier this year, he recalled that during the shoot, the entire team would listen to the Gayatri Mantra while traveling to the set every day, a practice that helped strengthen their collective spirit.
Star Cast Expected to Attend
The reunion is expected to bring together the film’s vast ensemble. While Aamir Khan will be the host, director Ashutosh Gowariker, along with actors including Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, Paul Blackthorne, Raghubir Yadav, Akhilendra Mishra, Yashpal Sharma, Rajesh Vivek, Aditya Lakhia, and others, are likely to attend.
The reunion will celebrate not just the film’s success but also the contributions of those behind the camera—editors, sound designers, and spot boys—who were integral to the film’s making.
About ‘Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India’
Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by Aamir Khan, Lagaan was released in 2001. Set in 1893 during the British Raj, the film follows a group of villagers in a drought-stricken region who challenge their oppressive British rulers to a game of cricket to escape crushing taxes.
The film was a monumental success both critically and commercially:
- It was India’s official entry to the 74th Academy Awards and received a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film
- It won eight National Film Awards, including Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment
- The soundtrack, composed by A.R. Rahman, featuring iconic tracks like Mitwa, Ghanan Ghanan, and Radha Kaise Na Jale, remains popular to this day
The limited theatrical re-release gives fans a rare opportunity to experience the cricket epic on the big screen once again, nearly 25 years after it first captivated audiences worldwide.
